Arteta reveals pre-season tactics to prepare Arsenal for travel challenges

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has disclosed that he intentionally sabotaged the club's travel arrangements during pre-season. His aim was to acclimatise his players to potential challenges they might face on the road. Arteta's tactics included changing routes, altering meal times, and creating uncomfortable conditions in the changing room, such as increasing the temperature and reducing the number of massage beds available.

The Premier League champions recently experienced travel delays during their trip to face Napoli in the Champions League. Arsenal's flight from Luton Airport was significantly delayed, arriving in Italy approximately three hours late. Arteta explained that he had prepared his players for such scenarios by simulating difficult situations in their pre-season games.

Arteta expressed his enthusiasm for these challenges, stating that he aims to create a variety of situations for his players to adapt to. He believes that when unexpected events occur, such as flight cancellations or traffic delays, his squad should remain calm and composed. He encouraged his players to use travel time effectively, whether that means bonding, resting, or strategising together.

In addition to travel disruptions, Arteta has employed unique methods to enhance his team's mindset. Last season, he orchestrated a scenario where a pickpocket, disguised as a waiter, stole from players during dinner. This exercise was designed to instil a 'pickpocket mentality' in his squad, encouraging them to remain vigilant against opponents seeking advantages. Arteta's innovative approach aims to prepare his team for any eventuality they may encounter during their matches.
