Arsenal's unbeaten start to the season came to a decisive halt as Brighton secured a resounding 3-0 victory at the Amex Stadium. The Gunners were aiming for an eighth consecutive win, which would have marked their best start to a campaign in over a century. However, Brighton's relentless pressure and quality proved too much for Mikel Arteta's side, who struggled to cope from the very beginning of the match.
Brighton took control early, with long-range goals from Pascal Gross and Charalampos Kostoulas giving them a 2-0 lead by half-time. Arsenal's defence was caught off guard, allowing both players ample space to strike. The second goal from Kostoulas came just moments after Bukayo Saka's close-range effort was saved, highlighting Arsenal's inability to create meaningful chances throughout the first half.
The Seagulls continued their dominance after the break, with Chema Andres scoring his first goal for the club from a corner taken by Gross. Brighton's attacking prowess left Arsenal struggling to escape their own half, and they could have extended their lead further had it not been for some missed opportunities, including a near miss from Pascal Struijk and a one-on-one save by David Raya.
Mikel Arteta acknowledged the disappointing performance from his team, crediting Brighton for their intensity and commitment. He noted that Arsenal failed to respect the game and lacked technical quality when in possession. Arteta emphasised the need for his players to learn from this experience to avoid similar outcomes in the future.
Brighton’s manager, Fabian Hurzeler, expressed pride in his team's performance, highlighting their togetherness and intensity. He stated that beating the reigning champions was a significant achievement, attributing their success to executing the basics effectively. The result propels Brighton to third in the Premier League, just two points behind Arsenal, while the Gunners will need to regroup ahead of their next fixture.
