Chelsea FC has set a new standard in women's football by becoming the first team in the Women's Super League (WSL) to implement comprehensive fertility and maternity policies. These initiatives aim to empower players to make informed choices about starting families while balancing the demands of elite sport. The club is committed to providing post-natal support, ensuring that motherhood and professional football can coexist without forcing players to choose between the two.

The new policies build on Chelsea's pioneering efforts in women's health, which began with the introduction of menstrual cycle tracking in February 2020. Head coach Sonia Bompastor emphasised the importance of supporting players by providing them with knowledge and options. She highlighted that every player has a unique journey, and the club's goal is to enable them to make informed decisions about their personal and professional lives.

Carly Telford, a former goalkeeper and now the club's commercial manager, has played a crucial role in establishing a partnership with Fertility Plus, a leading fertility clinic. Telford expressed the need for a clinic that understands the unique challenges female athletes face. The collaboration aims to provide a holistic approach to women's health, including options for hormone management and cycle tracking, allowing players to tailor their choices to their individual needs.

Although no players have publicly stated their intention to utilise the new resources, Telford reported positive feedback from the squad regarding the policies. Players feel comfortable with the support being offered, and the club has assured confidentiality in sharing information with medical professionals. Chelsea has previously supported players through pregnancy, and the new initiatives are designed to extend that support to all players, particularly those considering starting families.

The club's efforts are not just focused on its players but aim to raise awareness of women's health in general. Telford hopes that Chelsea's profile can inspire other clubs and organisations to adopt similar policies. She believes that understanding women's health and fertility is crucial for all women, not just athletes, and aims to foster a culture of awareness and empowerment around these issues in women's sports.
