Ciaron Brown scored his first two international goals to lead Northern Ireland to a stunning 3-0 victory over Ukraine in the Nations League. Brown, the only player in the starting line-up over the age of 24, opened the scoring early in the match. Isaac Price then doubled the lead in the 22nd minute at the Stadion Antona Malatinskeho in Trnava, Slovakia, helping Northern Ireland secure the top spot in Group B2.
Brown's second goal came in a strange manner just after the hour mark. He flicked on a free-kick from Pierce Charles, and Ukraine goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk allowed the bouncing ball to slip through his legs. This match marked a significant achievement for Northern Ireland, who have now amassed seven points from their first three games in the group, remaining unbeaten and yet to concede a goal.
Despite being ranked 37 places below Ukraine, Northern Ireland's young squad showcased their potential. This match was their first competitive encounter with Ukraine since the memorable 2-0 victory at Euro 2016. The performance delivered by Michael O'Neill's side has sparked hopes among fans for a major tournament appearance in the future.
O'Neill made three changes from the previous match against Hungary, with the average age of the starting XI dropping to 22 years, making it Northern Ireland's youngest post-war line-up. The team displayed a strong defensive effort, with Ukraine dominating possession but failing to create clear chances. Northern Ireland's solid defence kept Ukraine at bay, allowing them to secure a convincing win.
Late in the match, Ceadach O'Neill made his fourth appearance for Northern Ireland, putting to rest any speculation about a potential switch to the Republic of Ireland. Northern Ireland will now prepare for their upcoming match against Georgia in Belfast, looking to build on their impressive start in the Nations League.
