Crystal Palace faced a challenging match in Istanbul, settling for a 2-2 draw against Besiktas, despite leading at one point. Jean-Philippe Mateta scored his first goal since last season's UEFA Conference League final, helping Palace equalise after Wilfred Ndidi had given Besiktas a surprising lead just before half-time. Mateta initially had a goal disallowed for offside, but his persistence paid off later in the match.

The first half saw Palace dominate possession but fail to convert their chances. Ndidi's strike came as a shock, marking Besiktas' first shot on target just before the interval. However, the second half began positively for Palace, with Yermey Pino scoring shortly after the restart. VAR intervened to confirm the goal, allowing Palace to draw level and regain momentum in the match.

Just four minutes after Pino's equaliser, Mateta capitalised on a defensive error to score, putting Palace ahead. However, the lead was short-lived as Junior Olaitan equalised for Besiktas in the 73rd minute, ensuring the match ended in a draw. The game was tense, particularly after Umit Akdag received a red card for a dangerous tackle, leaving Besiktas with ten men for the final stages.

Crystal Palace manager Pierre Sage expressed frustration over the result, noting that his team deserved more from the match. He acknowledged the intensity of playing away in Istanbul and highlighted the need for concentration to avoid conceding crucial goals. Sage pointed out that the performance was an improvement from their previous outing and emphasised the importance of building on this result as they prepare for their next match against Newcastle.
