Ebou Adams netted a dramatic winner in the 89th minute as Portsmouth secured a 3-2 victory over Sheffield United at Fratton Park. The home side initially took control of the match, with Zak Swanson opening the scoring with a stunning long-range effort and Adrian Segecic doubling the lead after Hamza Choudhury was sent off for two bookings. Despite being a man down, the Blades fought back to level the score through Japhet Tanganga and Tom Cannon.
The first half saw a shift in momentum during the closing minutes. After a lackluster start, Cannon managed to score but Swanson's strike from 25 yards broke the deadlock just before half-time. Choudhury's dismissal shortly after left Sheffield United with ten men, complicating their efforts to recover. Portsmouth capitalised on this advantage with Segecic's goal early in the second half, seemingly putting them in a strong position.
However, the Blades responded with renewed energy, as Tanganga scored from a cross, followed by Cannon's header from a corner that equalised the match. Despite their numerical disadvantage, Sheffield United showed resilience and threatened to secure their first back-to-back wins of the season. Portsmouth, on the other hand, struggled to regain the lead despite several attempts, including a near miss from Keshi Anderson.
In a thrilling finish, Adams, who had come off the bench, found the net from a deflected cross, sealing the win for Portsmouth. This victory marked their third win of the Championship campaign, highlighting their ability to bounce back in a challenging match. The late goal brought relief to the home side, but the performance raised questions about their decision-making throughout the game.
Both managers expressed mixed feelings post-match. Portsmouth's John Mousinho acknowledged the need for improvement despite the win, while Sheffield United's Chris Wilder voiced frustration over officiating decisions, particularly regarding Choudhury's red card. The match showcased the competitive nature of the Championship, with both teams demonstrating their fighting spirit throughout the encounter.
