Alessia Russo and Lauren James showcased their vital roles for England as they both netted twice in a commanding 5-0 victory over Greece. This triumph in the second leg of their World Cup play-off first-round tie secured an 8-1 aggregate win for the Lionesses. The match at King Power Stadium began with an early goal from Russo, assisted by James, which was crucial following a challenging 3-1 win in Crete last Friday.

Once England took the lead, they maintained control of the match. James quickly added a second goal with a powerful strike, followed by Georgia Stanway's header, which made it three after a well-placed cross from Lauren Hemp. James scored her second goal shortly thereafter, before being substituted for Beth Mead at half-time, highlighting her significant contribution to the team's success.

Despite some missed opportunities, including two from Manchester City's Hemp, England continued to dominate. Stanway thought she had scored again early in the second half, but her effort was ruled offside by VAR after a superb volley. The Lionesses remained persistent in their attacking play, creating numerous chances throughout the match.

As the game progressed, head coach Sarina Wiegman made tactical adjustments, including giving debuts to Freya Godfrey and Lexi Potter. Russo later capped off the impressive performance with a goal, finishing from a tight angle to secure the final score. England will now advance to the second round of the World Cup play-offs, where they will face Ukraine in November and December.
