FIGC seeks Guardiola as head coach and is ready to adjust budget

FIGC officials, including Paolo Maldini and his advisor Leonardo, met with Guardiola over a three-day period to outline their vision for the future of the national team. They expressed their willingness to make significant adjustments to their budget to facilitate his potential appointment, indicating a strong desire to secure his services.

While it is unclear whether Guardiola is interested in taking the role, the FIGC is actively pursuing him as a candidate to replace Gennaro Gattuso. Gattuso left his position after Italy's failure to qualify for the World Cup, marking a disappointing trend for the national team, which has not qualified for the last three major tournaments since winning the European Championships in 2021 under Roberto Mancini.

In their proposal, Maldini and Leonardo presented a comprehensive plan that goes beyond merely appointing a coach. They envision Guardiola as the key figure in a broader 'Azzurro project' aimed at revitalising Italian football. This initiative would involve a complete overhaul of the national setup, affecting not just the senior team but all levels of national football, reflecting the urgency of their mission following recent failures.
