Guardiola has turned down the chance to coach the Italy national team

Pep Guardiola has declined the opportunity to become the head coach of the Italy national football team, paving the way for Andrea Pirlo to take over the role. The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) had approached Guardiola in hopes of securing his services after Gennaro Gattuso's departure. Guardiola's decision, reportedly influenced by personal reasons beyond football, was communicated to FIGC officials after a series of discussions held over three days.

The FIGC had made a significant effort to persuade Guardiola, with Paolo Maldini and his advisor Leonardo outlining a comprehensive plan for the future of Italian football. Their vision included a complete overhaul of the national team structure, aiming to rebuild after Italy's failure to qualify for the recent World Cup. Guardiola listened to their proposal but ultimately chose not to accept the position.

Following Guardiola's decision, Andrea Pirlo is expected to terminate his contract with United FC, a club based in Dubai, to finalise his appointment as Italy's new head coach. Pirlo's move comes as part of the FIGC's broader strategy to rejuvenate Italian football, which has struggled since winning the European Championships in 2021. The federation is keen to implement changes following consecutive failures to qualify for major tournaments.

Prior to approaching Guardiola, the FIGC had also reached out to Carlo Ancelotti, who is currently under contract with the Brazil national team. The federation's recruitment of Maldini and Leonardo signifies a significant shift in Italian football management, aiming to address the challenges posed by recent underperformance on the international stage. The search for Gattuso's successor reflects a commitment to restoring Italy's footballing reputation.

Guardiola, now a free agent after leaving Manchester City, has expressed a desire to take a break from coaching to spend more time with family. He previously indicated that he would not pursue a coaching role immediately after his departure from City, citing a need for rest and personal time. Despite his interest in international management, Guardiola remains focused on his personal commitments at this time.
