Hibernian Football Club has parted ways with head coach David Gray after a disappointing start to the season, which sees the team sitting ninth in the Scottish Premiership. The decision follows a fourth league defeat in six matches, with the latest loss coming against bottom-placed Kilmarnock. Despite reaching the League Cup semi-finals, Hibs were eliminated from European competition after a defeat to Gent in the Conference League play-offs.
Under Gray's management, Hibernian has struggled significantly, particularly at home, where they have now lost six consecutive league matches, equalling a club record last achieved in 1920. Gray was appointed as head coach on a permanent basis in June 2024, after previously serving as interim manager multiple times. His tenure began positively with a third-place finish in the 2024/25 season, but results have since declined sharply.
The club is now on the lookout for its sixth permanent manager in less than five years, following the departures of several coaches, including Jack Ross and Lee Johnson. John Potter will take over as interim head coach for the upcoming match against Aberdeen, as Hibernian's hierarchy prepares to announce a new permanent manager in the near future.
In a statement, Hibernian's executive chairman Ian Gordon expressed gratitude for Gray's contributions, acknowledging his inspirational role at the club and the stability he brought during his time. However, the board felt compelled to make a change due to the team's recent downturn in results and performances, which left them just two points above the relegation zone. Gray's final remarks highlighted the challenges the team faced, as he called for patience amid frustrations from fans.
