Italy broke the deadlock shortly after half-time. Following a missed chance from Mateo Retegui, Tonali capitalised on a poor headed clearance from Isaac Price, striking a first-time shot into the right corner. From that point, Italy dominated the match, with Northern Ireland failing to threaten the goal effectively, despite Charles making several saves.

Moise Kean doubled Italy's lead later in the half, converting a high ball in the area after a series of near misses.
