Jean-Philippe Mateta wanted to continue playing after ear injury

Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta has expressed his desire to continue playing despite suffering a severe ear injury during an FA Cup match against Millwall. Mateta required 25 stitches after a challenge from Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts, which resulted in him being stretchered off at Selhurst Park. The match ended with Palace winning 3-1, but the incident left Mateta bloodied and in need of immediate medical attention.

In a recent interview, Mateta shared that he was unaware of the extent of his injuries and even pleaded with the club doctor to allow him to return to the pitch. He described the moment, stating that he felt ready to play and believed his injury was a minor cut. However, the doctor assessed the situation and ultimately decided against letting him continue, prioritising his health over Mateta's eagerness to play.

Despite the gruesome nature of the incident, Mateta does not hold any ill will towards Roberts, asserting that the challenge was a mistake rather than a malicious act. He acknowledged the pressures players face during matches and suggested that intense emotions can lead to unfortunate incidents. Mateta also addressed the backlash Roberts faced on social media, noting that such reactions are often extreme and not something he condones.

Mateta is currently targeting a return to action for the FA Cup quarter-finals against Fulham after missing a recent Premier League match. He has resumed individual training and is optimistic about his recovery. Upon his return, he plans to wear a protective mask to ensure his safety as his injuries heal completely. Mateta is in regular contact with medical staff regarding his rehabilitation and hopes to be back on the pitch soon.
