Manchester City faces potential expulsion from the league if guilty verdict stands

Gary Neville has expressed concerns regarding Manchester City's ownership group, stating that they may struggle to maintain their status at the club if the Premier League's guilty verdict on financial breaches is upheld after appeal. City has announced that it is filing a comprehensive appeal against the ruling, which found the club guilty of significant financial rule violations over a nine-year span. The case has been ongoing since 2018, culminating in the Premier League's recent determination of guilt.

The Premier League's potential sanctions against City could range from fines and points deductions to the extreme measure of expulsion from the league. Neville, who co-owns Salford City, believes that the situation necessitates a thorough review of whether City’s owners meet the regulatory standards set by the league. He emphasised that the alleged misconduct has had a damaging effect on the reputation of English football.

Neville highlighted the importance of the owners' and directors' test, arguing that it would be challenging for City's owners to comply with these regulations if the guilty verdict stands. He pointed out that football clubs are community assets, and their ownership comes with significant responsibilities. The focus should be on assessing the owners' compliance with the rules, as well as the legitimacy of the club's achievements during the disputed period.

The investigatory panel concluded that Manchester City had inflated its revenue through what the Premier League described as sham deals, exceeding £900 million to bypass financial fair-play regulations. This financial manipulation enabled the club to acquire top players and achieve dominance in English football. Neville lamented the impact of these findings, suggesting that if the verdict remains, it would cast a shadow over the club's successes and the integrity of the league.
