Mancini returns as Italy head coach after Maldini's swift exit

Roberto Mancini has been reappointed as head coach of the Italian national team, marking his return after previously guiding Italy to victory in Euro 2020. His comeback follows the team's failure to qualify for a third consecutive World Cup, highlighting the urgency for a change in leadership. Mancini's previous stint lasted over five years, ending when he resigned in August 2023 to take over as head coach of Saudi Arabia.

Mancini's reappointment comes on the heels of Paolo Maldini's abrupt departure from his role as technical director of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), just 16 days after his appointment. Maldini's exit has led to speculation regarding his successor, with Claudio Ranieri expected to take over the technical director position. The FIGC's leadership shake-up aims to address the national team's recent struggles.

The search for a new head coach saw Andrea Pirlo ruled out due to his ties with a Russian gambling firm, which raised concerns among FIGC officials amidst the ongoing war in Ukraine. Pirlo had been a leading candidate after Pep Guardiola declined the role, citing personal reasons. Following his exclusion, Pirlo defended his involvement with the gambling company, emphasising the commercial nature of his agreement.

Maldini and Leonardo had engaged with Guardiola to discuss a broader vision for Italian football, aiming for a comprehensive overhaul of the national setup. Despite the enticing proposal, Guardiola ultimately turned down the opportunity. Ancelotti was also approached before Guardiola, but he remains committed to his role with the Brazil national team, leaving Mancini as the clear choice to lead Italy forward.
