Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta expressed his desire to continue playing after suffering a serious ear injury during an FA Cup match against Millwall. The injury occurred due to a challenge from Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts, resulting in Mateta needing 25 stitches. He was stretchered off the pitch at Selhurst Park, but despite the severity of the injury, Mateta was eager to return to action and even argued with the team doctor to let him play on.
Mateta recounted the incident, stating he was focused on getting back into the game after the challenge. He did not realise the extent of his injuries at the time and believed he had only a minor cut. He described feeling blood but no pain, and insisted on continuing to play, saying he was ready to go back on the field after the initial shock wore off.
Despite the gruesome nature of the injury, Mateta does not hold any ill will towards Roberts, believing the challenge was unintentional. He acknowledged the pressure on players during matches and described the incident as a mistake. Mateta also commented on the backlash Roberts faced on social media, which led to Millwall issuing a statement supporting their player.
Mateta missed Crystal Palace's recent Premier League match against Ipswich but is aiming to return for the FA Cup quarter-finals against Fulham. He has resumed individual training and is in regular contact with medical specialists regarding his recovery. When he returns, Mateta plans to wear a protective mask to ensure his stitches heal properly.
The striker confirmed his commitment to returning to the pitch as soon as possible. He has been training individually and hopes to be fit for the upcoming match. Mateta is focused on his recovery and is determined to contribute to his team's efforts in the FA Cup, while also prioritising his health and safety during the healing process.
