Hearts secured a 2-0 victory over Motherwell at Fir Park, marking their first win in three matches. The result brings Hearts closer to the top two in the Scottish Premiership, now just four points behind Rangers and eight off leaders Celtic. Meanwhile, Motherwell's defeat extends their losing streak to six games, matching a record last set in April 2003, leaving them in a precarious position.
Claudio Braga opened the scoring for Hearts in the 29th minute, heading in from a cross by Sabah Kerjota. The Edinburgh side capitalised on their only clear chance of the first half, while goalkeeper Beau Reus made several important saves to keep Motherwell at bay. Despite Motherwell's attempts to respond, including a near miss from Seb Palmer-Houlden, they could not find the back of the net.
The second half saw Motherwell push for an equaliser, but they struggled to convert their opportunities. Hearts remained composed, focusing on counter-attacks. Motherwell's Joe Hodge and Eythor Bjorgolfsson both had chances but were thwarted by Reus. Motherwell's frustration grew as they failed to score despite multiple attempts, including a shot that struck the post.
Hearts sealed their victory with a second goal in the 86th minute, as Calvin Miller struck from outside the box, marking his seventh goal of the season. The win was crucial for Hearts, who faced a challenging fixture schedule, including travel from a recent match against Trabzonspor. Head coach Wouter Vrancken expressed satisfaction with the team's performance amid difficult circumstances.
Motherwell manager Alfred Johansson acknowledged his team's struggles, emphasising the need to compete more effectively in both penalty areas. He highlighted the importance of the upcoming match against St Johnstone, urging his players to improve their performance. Johansson remains optimistic about his squad's potential, despite the current negative momentum.
