Newcastle prepared for Eddie Howe's exit, says sporting director Ross Wilson

Newcastle United's sporting director, Ross Wilson, has revealed that the club was ready for Eddie Howe's resignation for several months. Despite Howe's unexpected departure in July, which led to the appointment of Matthias Jaissle, Wilson stated that the situation never felt chaotic. Jaissle has since enjoyed an unbeaten start to his managerial reign at the club.

Wilson noted that while they had anticipated Howe's exit, the sale of Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal for £75 million was not part of their strategy. He expressed that losing Guimaraes was disappointing, but the club had prepared for Howe's departure, allowing for a swift transition to Jaissle. Wilson emphasised the importance of anticipation and excitement at Newcastle.

The summer transfer window saw Newcastle raise approximately £250 million through player sales while bringing in eight young players, including high-profile signings like Nico Gonzalez and Matias Fernandez-Pardo. Wilson highlighted that trading players is essential for success in the Premier League, stating that clubs must adapt to remain competitive.

Wilson also explained that the departure of club-record signing Nick Woltemade on loan to Juventus was necessary to facilitate the signing of Fernandez-Pardo from Lille. He clarified that the club's internal discussions revolved around ensuring financial sustainability while making strategic acquisitions.
