Phil Foden scored a hat-trick as Manchester City secured a convincing 5-1 victory over AEK Athens in the Champions League. Foden, who had not scored in ten months prior to this match, followed up his goal against Ipswich with three well-taken finishes, two of which came from assists by Rico Lewis. This win marked City's second victory in the group stage of the competition this season.

Despite resting Erling Haaland, City showcased their attacking prowess with 17-year-old Floyd Samba stepping in as a forward. Enzo Maresca's side demonstrated their depth, proving they can find the net without their star striker. Elliot Anderson also contributed to the scoreline, netting his first club goal during a dominant first half that saw City create numerous chances.

AEK Athens struggled to make an impact, failing to register a shot on target until Stavros Pilios scored early in the second half. However, City's response was swift, with Rayan Cherki restoring their three-goal lead shortly after. Foden then completed his hat-trick with a precise finish, solidifying his return to form and demonstrating his importance to the team.

Maresca expressed confidence in Foden's abilities, acknowledging his previous struggles but affirming his potential. Foden himself stated that he is still working towards regaining his best form, emphasising the importance of hard work and determination. AEK manager Marko Nikolic admitted his side showed too much respect for City, acknowledging their superior finishing and overall quality in the match.
