Antoine Semenyo experienced a moment of shock after allegedly being racially abused by a Liverpool fan during a match at Anfield. The incident occurred while Semenyo, then with Bournemouth, was preparing to take a throw-in approximately 30 minutes into the game on August 15 last year. The court heard that Mark Mogan, 47, directed the abuse at Semenyo, who was reportedly stunned by the comments made towards him.
During the proceedings at Liverpool Magistrates' Court, prosecutor Simon Jones detailed how Mogan shouted, "Hurry up and take the throw-in, you black b*****d," directly at Semenyo. Witnesses noted that Semenyo appeared to freeze momentarily, unable to comprehend the racial slur. Mogan continued his tirade, addressing Semenyo with further abusive language, which left the footballer visibly upset.
Semenyo reported the incident to the match referee, Anthony Taylor, when the opportunity arose. Mogan was subsequently removed from the stadium at half-time. Video evidence presented in court showed Mogan in an agitated state, and witnesses described him throwing chewing gum at Semenyo, further escalating the situation.
A fellow fan, Neil Sherratt, testified that he saw Mogan leave his seat in the disabled section and approach the pitch as Semenyo prepared for the throw-in. Sherratt noted Semenyo's shocked reaction and his response to Mogan's taunts. Another witness, Nicholas Collins, described Mogan as becoming cocky after the incident, claiming he would confront the police if they intervened.
Mogan, who denies the charges of racially aggravated behaviour, provided a different account to police, claiming Semenyo had insulted him first. The prosecution argued that Mogan's statements were false. Semenyo is anticipated to give his evidence via videolink as the trial progresses.
