Everton advanced to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup after defeating Newcastle 3-1 at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. James Garner opened the scoring with a precise shot into the bottom corner in the 34th minute, following a mistake from Newcastle's Amar Dedic. Hayden Hackney doubled the lead just before half-time, guiding a cross from Thierno Barry into the net, marking his first goal for the club.
The Toffees continued their strong performance in the second half, with Barry scoring Everton's third goal in the 69th minute. He finished a well-executed counter-attack after receiving a pass from Kieran Dewsbury-Hall. Newcastle managed to pull one back late in the match, with Dan Burn heading in a consolation goal, but it was not enough to change the outcome.
Newcastle head coach Matthias Jaissle expressed disappointment in his team's performance, highlighting a lack of clinical finishing as a recurring issue. He noted that despite creating numerous opportunities, the team failed to convert these chances into goals. Jaissle emphasised the need for his players to learn from their mistakes and improve their maturity on the pitch.
Everton's manager David Moyes praised his team's values and professionalism, particularly in light of Jack Grealish's absence due to a club decision. He acknowledged the squad's commitment to the club's principles and their ability to perform under pressure. Moyes recognised the limitations of his squad but remained optimistic about their efforts to compete effectively in the tournament.
