Arsenal's appeal against Max Dowman's red card has been rejected following their defeat to Fleetwood Town in the Carabao Cup. The Premier League champions faced an unexpected exit from the tournament after Dowman received a straight red card for violent conduct. The 16-year-old kicked out at Fleetwood's Harrison Neal after a challenge that went unpunished, leading to his dismissal by referee Michael Salisbury.

As a result of the FA's decision, Dowman will miss Arsenal's next three domestic matches, including key fixtures against Liverpool, Hull, and Newcastle. An independent commission dismissed Arsenal's claims of wrongful dismissal and excessive punishment. This setback comes at a time when Dowman was expected to gain more playing time due to injuries affecting other squad members.

Dowman has had limited opportunities this season, featuring in two league matches and one Champions League game. He had started both of Arsenal's Carabao Cup matches, scoring twice against Ipswich before his red card against Fleetwood. Manager Mikel Arteta had advised Dowman on the challenges he would face, emphasising the importance of maintaining composure during matches.

Former Arsenal player Paul Merson has expressed concerns regarding Dowman's ability to handle being targeted by opponents. Merson noted that Dowman, already regarded as a superstar at 16, must learn to cope with the physical nature of the game. He highlighted the need for Dowman to adapt and perform consistently, even when facing tough challenges from defenders.

Arsenal's squad depth has been tested due to injuries and suspensions, particularly in wide positions. With injuries to players like Bukayo Saka and Christos Tzolis, the team is left with limited options. Mikel Arteta may need to rely on younger players or adapt the formation to address the lack of available senior players on the flanks as they prepare for their upcoming match against Liverpool.
