Stoke City secured a 2-1 victory over Blackburn Rovers in the Championship, with Jack McGlynn scoring a stunning free-kick. McGlynn's goal came in the 43rd minute, catching the Blackburn defence off guard as he opted to shoot rather than cross. This marked his fourth goal of the season, giving Stoke the lead just before half-time after they had endured early pressure from their opponents.
The Potters extended their advantage in the 68th minute following an own goal from Blackburn's Moussa Baradji. Stoke had been applying consistent pressure, and despite a missed opportunity from Robert Bozenik earlier in the half, they capitalised on a defensive error to take a two-goal lead. The visitors appeared to be on course for a comfortable win, dominating possession and chances throughout the match.
Blackburn mounted a late comeback, with Andri Gudjohnsen scoring in the 87th minute to reduce the deficit. The Icelandic forward's tap-in came after Stoke's goalkeeper Viktor Johansson failed to hold onto a shot from Sam Morsy. Gudjohnsen nearly equalised shortly after, but his header was disallowed for a push, leading to frustration among the Rovers fans and coaching staff.
Stoke's defence held firm despite the late scare, allowing them to secure their eighth win in eleven matches. The victory sees them level on goal difference with second-placed Birmingham City in the Championship standings. Stoke's manager Mark Robins praised McGlynn's audacity and skill for his remarkable free-kick, while Blackburn's Tony Mowbray expressed his dissatisfaction with the officiating decisions during the match.
