Coventry City manager Frank Lampard expressed frustration with VAR following his team's 3-1 defeat to Everton. He highlighted three key incidents where VAR reviews went against Coventry, including two penalty appeals and a potential handball leading to Everton's second goal. Despite these reviews, the on-field referee Stuart Attwell did not award any penalties, which left Lampard disappointed with the officiating.
The match saw Coventry initially take the lead, but they were ultimately unable to secure a victory. Lampard stated that while he does not want to complain excessively, significant decisions can influence the outcome of a match. He emphasised that VAR is meant to assist in such situations, but in this instance, it failed to deliver the expected support.
One contentious moment involved James Tarkowski, who appeared to elbow Ethan Pinnock and pull the hair of Caleb Yirenkyi during a defensive play. Although VAR reviewed the incident, no card was issued. Lampard argued that the rules regarding hair pulling should have warranted a penalty, as it impeded Yirenkyi's ability to compete for the ball.
Another critical incident occurred when Taiwo Awoniyi was brought down in the box by Vitalii Mykolenko. Referee Attwell did not award a penalty, and VAR concluded that the contact happened outside the box. Lampard believed this was a clear foul deserving of a penalty, a sentiment echoed by pundits who felt VAR's decision was inadequate.
The third incident involved a potential handball by Everton's goalscorer before his second goal. VAR reviewed the play but found no conclusive evidence to overturn the goal. Lampard maintained that the ball touched the player's hand before entering the net, while pundits debated the clarity of the VAR decision. The match ended with Everton securing the win despite the controversies surrounding the officiating.
