Sunderland secured their place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Brentford at the Stadium of Light. The Black Cats scored three goals in a remarkable 13-minute spell during the first half, dramatically turning the game around after Brentford had started strongly. The visitors had several near misses, including a shot that hit the post and another cleared off the line while the score was still level.
Jocelin Ta Bi played a crucial role in Sunderland's success, providing all three assists in the first half. The 21-year-old winger, who joined the club in January, showcased his talent by creating opportunities for his teammates. His first assist came when Chemsdine Talbi tapped in a low drive that Ta Bi had sent toward goal, followed by a quick second goal from Timur Tutierov just three minutes later.
The third goal for Sunderland came from Malick Fofana, who scored with a powerful header after Ta Bi delivered an excellent cross. Despite Brentford's Callum Wilson managing to pull one back just before half-time, the Bees struggled to build on that momentum. They only found the net again in the dying moments of the match through Igor Thiago, but it was too late to change the outcome.
Sunderland's head coach, Regis Le Bris, expressed optimism about the win, highlighting the importance of character and consistency in their campaign. He praised Ta Bi for his bravery and talent, noting that the victory could serve as a powerful catalyst for the team's season. Meanwhile, Brentford's coach Keith Andrews lamented the poor defensive performance that led to the quick succession of goals, emphasising the need for improvement.
The match showcased Sunderland's resilience and attacking prowess, while Brentford will need to reassess their defensive strategy moving forward. Both teams will now shift their focus to upcoming fixtures in their respective leagues, with Sunderland looking to build on this momentum in the Carabao Cup and the league.
