London City Lionesses sit third in the WSL, seven points clear of Arsenal

Head coach Eder Maestre has successfully integrated new talent into the London City Lionesses, who currently sit third in the Women's Super League (WSL) with 16 points. The club's ambition is to challenge the traditional top teams and qualify for European competition. Maestre's task involved balancing the talents of incoming players with the existing squad, all while adhering to Michele Kang's vision for the club.

Maestre attributes the team's early success to the strong foundations laid in the previous season and the shared values among players. He emphasised the importance of aggressive play and quick ball recovery, which has resonated with the squad. The coach expressed satisfaction with the team's chemistry, highlighting the need for continued development and efficiency in their performances.

Alexia Putellas, who recently won her third Ballon d'Or, has emerged as a key figure for the Lionesses. As the top league scorer for the team, her ability to connect defence and attack has been instrumental. Maestre praised her leadership and work ethic, stating that her presence serves as an inspiration for younger players in the squad.

Danielle van de Donk has also made a significant impact since returning from injury, contributing eight goal involvements in eight appearances. Maestre noted her energy and leadership qualities, which enhance the team's identity. As the Lionesses prepare to face unbeaten Manchester City, Maestre acknowledges that winning against top teams is essential for the club's progression.

The upcoming match against Manchester City presents a crucial test for the Lionesses. Maestre believes that a victory could solidify their status as serious title contenders. He emphasised the need for consistency and humility, acknowledging that every game is unique. The support from home fans will be vital as the team aims to maintain their strong home performance and continue building on their recent successes.
